Wisconsin Schools of Grazing

The Wisconsin Schools of Grazing program announces its 2025 educational series, offering livestock producers comprehensive training in managed grazing techniques through three intensive two-day sessions scheduled across Wisconsin this summer and fall.

The program will take place at three locations:

  • August 8-9, 2025: Marshfield School at the UW Marshfield Agricultural Research Station, 208356 Drake Ave N, Stratford, WI 54484

  • August 13-14, 2025: Seymour School at the Oneida Nation Farm, N6010 County Rd C, Seymour, WI 54165

  • September 22-23, 2025: Lancaster School at the UW Lancaster Agricultural Research Station, 7396 WI-35 & 81, Lancaster, WI 53813

Each session combines in-depth educational sessions with hands-on field experiences, led by managed grazing experts. The comprehensive curriculum covers essential topics including principles of managed grazing, soil health and pasture productivity, paddock sizing and placement, animal genetics and herd health, establishing and renovating pastures, and developing personalized grazing systems.

"These schools provide farmers and grazing advocates with practical, science-based knowledge they can immediately apply to improve their grazing," said Beth Heinze of GrassWorks. "While the host farms feature cattle grazing, the concepts learned are valuable for producers working with all ruminant species, including sheep and goats."

Registration includes all instruction, meals, grazing guides, pasture sticks, and a binder full of fact sheets and resources. The program is designed for both beginning and experienced graziers looking to enhance their knowledge and refine their management practices.

Those interested in attending can register online at grassworks.orgIn order to keep the schools hands on and interactive, space is limited to the first 20 participants at each school. Registration is currently open for all schools and closes 5 days prior to the start of each school.

The Wisconsin Schools of Grazing program is presented by GrassWorks Inc. in partnership with USDA-NRCS, University of Wisconsin Madison Division of Extension, the UW Marshfield Ag Research Station, the UW Lancaster Ag Research Station, and with the support of the Oneida Nation. These grazing schools and other GrassWorks educational programs are made possible with financial support from the USDA Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) grant program, as well as the support of GrassWorks members and other generous donors.
