Position Available with Sharing Our Roots

The Farmer Mentor will work closely with the Farmer Cohort Coordinator and Farm Manager to support a small group of mixed produce farmers at Sharing Our Roots farm with technical assistance through in-person and remote engagement. The Farmer Mentor’s primary responsibility will be to share farming knowledge, skills, and methods for successful farm planning (from seeding to market) with the beginning farmers at Sharing Our Roots. This position is expected to be no more than 20 hours per month between April and October, 2026.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include but are not limited to the following:

Mentorship:

● Spend 12-20 hours per month providing technical assistance to farmers on various farming skills. While the majority of the farmer support will be in person at our farm in Northfield, some hours may be remote.

● Work in collaboration with the Sharing Our Roots Farm Manager to support farmers with specific farming skills, including but not limited to:

○ Seed searching and ordering for organic certification compliance

○ Greenhouse seeding methods

○ Seeding/transplanting

○ Pest and weed control methods that meet organic standards

○ Encouraging food safety and GAPS standards

○ Harvesting, washing and packing of produce to industry standards

○ Assist farmers in finding markets to sell their products

● Be available to answer farmer questions via phone or email (within your hours)

● Ability to drive to the Sharing Our Roots Farm in Northfield, MN to teach or share information with farmers

● Participate in SOR farmer training opportunities as able


Miscellaneous

● Track your time and invoice Sharing Our Roots on a monthly basis.


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

● 5+ Technical farming experience and familiarity with production-scale operations.

● Familiarity with food justice and sustainable agriculture.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cultures, including with immigrant and BIPOC communities.

● Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Strong organizational and follow-through skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, accommodate farmers’ preferred methods of learning and effectively organize/track your mentoring.

● Ability to work onsite at the SOR Farm; valid driver’s license.

● Reliable internet and phone service for remote days.


Preferred

● Experience leading and/or facilitating training; ability to effectively convey information to folks with varying learning styles and share knowledge without hierarchy.

● Bilingual/bicultural (e.g., Spanish, Swahili or Arabic) strongly preferred.

● Experience working with shared systems (equipment, scheduling, or cooperative use).

● Understanding of cooperative or shared leadership structures.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

● Pay: $45-55/hour, not to exceed $6,800 total, averaging 12-20 hours per month
