The new traceability rule, Rule 204 of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), is set to become effective in June 2028. The rule introduces many new traceability requirements for foods deemed high-risk. The time to prepare is now, and you can start with Farm Commons’ new traceability resources here.
Farm Commons has created videos, a short-form quick-reference guide, and, for those who are really ready to dive in, a long-form downloadable PDF guide covering almost all the ins and outs of the new rule. These resources include guidance on:
What produce foods are on the high-risk list and subject to the rule,
What exemptions apply to smaller diversified businesses, and
What documents and processes will producers have to add to their workflow to comply with the rule
For a limited time, Farm Commons is offering $10 gift cards to the first 45 people who complete a survey about their experiences with the resources. You just need to review the resources at the link above and answer a few questions!
Also, the FDA recently published a new guidance document on the traceability rule. You can comment on this guidance up until May 21, 2026. These comments will be considered as the FDA works on the final version of the guidance, so your input as a small producer is vital! If you want to comment but need assistance, please reach out to chloe@farmcommons.org.
