The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a part-time MinneAg Policy Intern (approximately 4-7 hours/week), based in our Minneapolis office. Apply by December 9, 4:07 pm.
Who are we?
IATP is a nonprofit research and policy advocacy organization with its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. IATP works locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. We have a 37-year history of pursuing just and resilient food and agriculture policies that benefit family farmers, food and agriculture workers, rural communities and the planet. Our team of 16 staff works locally, nationally, and globally, connecting the dots of our food system. We match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring good policy into practice. In addition to Minneapolis, we have small offices in Washington, D.C. and Berlin, Germany.
MinneAg is a statewide network that brings together a diverse coalition of organizations to champion nonpartisan policy solutions protecting Minnesota's communities, farmers, and climate. MinneAg is housed at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) and co-coordinated with the Land Stewardship Project, Minnesota Farmers Union, and MN350. MinneAg aims to facilitate collaboration and align efforts across this broad group of stakeholders to advance shared priorities around food, farming, and the environment. What will you do?
IATP is seeking a part-time intern to assist MinneAg policy efforts during the upcoming legislative session. This internship will start in early February and is expected to be approximately 4-7 hours per week over the course of five months, with a flexible hybrid schedule that includes work both at the State Capitol complex in downtown St. Paul and our office in Northeast Minneapolis. In this role, you will help track and organize support for MinneAg priorities, working closely with MinneAg coordinators and network members. The focus will be on direct policy tracking and support throughout the 2026 Minnesota legislative session, roughly February-June.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor and track bills introduced during the 2026 Minnesota legislative session that align with MinneAg’s priorities.
- Attend and summarize key hearings, committee meetings, and other legislative proceedings, both in-person at the State Capitol and via recordings.
- Draft and send out MinneAg’s biweekly “MinneAg Moment” newsletter, sharing relevant updates, information on select bills, event info, etc., following established branding and formatting guidelines.
- Support coordination of an in-person MinneAg event, likely to be held at the State Capitol in late March.
- As needed, support the creation of additional MinneAg resources, such as issue briefs, talking points, or legislative process orientation resources.
Additional activities may be assigned as opportunities arise based on the needs of the program and interests of the intern.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
- Experienced in tracking and organizing legislative activities to support nonpartisan policy solutions.
- Skilled in coordinating coalitions and working with diverse partners to align on food, farming, and climate goals.
- Skilled at communication, both in writing and in direct meetings.
- Committed to IATP’s mission and values, with a curiosity and eagerness to learn about relevant subject areas. Interested or experienced in engaging with policy advocacy.
- Able to synthesize complex information effectively.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented in managing tasks.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Access to a reliable computer (a computer can be provided for in-office use if requested).
Physical Requirements:
- The position will be based in Minneapolis and follow a flexible hybrid schedule.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Some travel to the Capitol complex in downtown Saint Paul may be required.
Compensation and Benefits:
Compensation for this internship is based upon qualifications and experience, with an hourly range of $18-20/hour. IATP offers interns paid safe and sick time. Enjoy a lively, collegial, flexible, and dog-friendly work environment.
