Farm Caretaker Sought for North Dakota Farm

Our family is looking for a farm caretaker in rural North Dakota (McHenry County). Historic multi-bedroom fully equipped rural farmhouse sits on hill surrounded by rolling prairie, woods.

Large secluded yard. Resident friendly older dog who may be boarded over the summer but otherwise would require care and feeding. Looking for caretaker (single or pair - friends or partners) to start May 1 2026 (some flexibility), for 8-12 months or longer if a good fit. Quiet mornings, wide-open views, starry nights. We have a network of family and friends in the area that help support operations. Housing-only arrangement: free rent, utilities.

Responsibilities: watch over house/outbuildings, meet occasional repair workers, coordinate/handle light maintenance, provide daily care for very friendly older dog, mow grass in summer, shovel/snowblow around house in winter, keep pipes from freezing in cold snaps.

Amenities: Internet (high-speed fiber), smart TV, piano, snow plowing by a neighbor during storms, use of 4WD pickup. Pets welcome if well-behaved and friendly with resident dog. Nearest town w/ services 15 mins away; larger city Minot 45 mins. Paved highway is three minutes from farmhouse via gravel. You’ll have privacy but be willing to be neighborly — we have a supportive network of family/friends nearby who care about the property. Family will visit occasionally (2-3x/yr) with advance notice and primarily stay upstairs; you may stay or take time away during family visits. Ideally looking for someone self-sufficient, mechanically handy, eager to enjoy the peace and beauty of country living.

This would be a good short-term opportunity for someone looking for a writing retreat to finish a project in peace and quiet or to work virtually; but for someone interested in regenerative agriculture, there are opportunities for further collaboration, longer stays, and sustainable farm development that would be possible in collaboration with the family with the right fit. You can see photos of the property by visiting https://photos.app.goo.gl/yA7DPgriRQzXXm2w9

If you are interested in learning more, please email farmnodak@gmail.com with a copy to jtstevens.ucdavis@gmail.com with a short bio and interest statement; we will follow up with interested parties who may be a good fit over video call.
